80486
This is yet another microprocessor from the IA-32 family by Intel. It's very very very similar to 80386, but it has an optimized instruction set and on-chip data and instruction cache. 80486 also has an optional on-chip FPU. These enhancements give about 1.75 to 2 times better speed for a 80486 than a 80386 of the same speed (clock rate).80486 came in several flavours...
- 486DX - Vanilla 486 with all of the features named above
- 486DX2 - Doubled external speed
- 486DX4 - Quadrupled external speed
- 486SX - No internal FPU, 24-bit address bus allowing up to 16MB of RAM
- 486SL - Power conserving implementation of 486 aimed at portable computers
