Bitdepth

Bitdepth

Bitdepth refers to the number of colors possible with each pixel.

Common Bitdepths:

  • 1-bit: Black and white image
  • 4-bit: Grayscale image or 16 color paletted
  • 8-bit: 256 color paletted image
  • 16-bit: RGB 5-6-5 format or RGBA 5-5-5-1 unpaletted
  • 24-bit: RGB 8-8-8 format
  • 32-bit: RGB 8-8-8 or RGBA 8-8-8-8
Note: 32-bit with RGB channels is often used instead of 24-bit color (even though eight bits are wasted) because 32-bit images are easier to process since each pixel falls on even memory boundaries, so it is easier to use special CPU or GPU features, such as  ?SIMD
