CSMACD
csmacd

Acronym for: Carrier Sense Multiple Access Collision Detection

The clients in a  ?net listen before sending data; if the line is free, they try to send data through it. When two clients send data at the same time there will be a "collision" of data (the frequencies of the two signals overlay). With csmacd, the controller gives the both clients two different intervals until they can try to send data again.

The intervals the clients get are random and so far from each other, that these clients will not cause a  ?collision with each other when trying to send data again.

In large  ?nets there are many collisions;  ?switches provide help by building up a seperate  ?net between sending and receiving clients.
