COBOL

COBOL stands for COmmon Business Oriented Language. From the abbreviation one can conclude that COBOL was meant as a language for developing programs for businesses, and not for making operating systems. COBOL was first developed by the CODASYL (Conference on Data Systems Languages) Committee.

A dialect of COBOL is supported under OS/400.
