Companding
Companding
A combination of compressing and expanding.

The wide range of amplitudes of audio signals , particularly for audio make it difficult to Digitize in a compact way. If the Amplitude range is compressed the digital signals can use much less storage and when the signals are re-converted to audio, expansion can be used to restore the original amplitude range.
Companding is also used as a noise reduction system for cassette tapes and for cinema sound tracks .
