The quartz crystal which is used as a timing component for a microprocessor. The mechanical vibration of a piezoelectric crystal can be electrically induced and is at a constant frquency if the crystal temperature is constant. By coating opposite sidesof the crystal with thin metal films the mechanical vibration can be used as a time controller for a computer clock or watch. The frequency is determined by the dimensions of the crystal and the circuit in which it is used.
