DOS that most people know about is a product that Microsoft bought from Seattle Computer Products, a company founded and run by Tim Patterson - the chief designer of what was then known as QDOS -- Quick and Dirty Operating System.
QDOS was born out of the need to make something simpler and nicer than the most popular operating system of the time called CP/M.
MS DOS was released in August 1981.
