Data Communication Equipment

Data Communication Equipment or DCE is just the designation of the device connected to one end of an RS-232 connection. The other end is DataTerminalEquipment, or DTE. Originally, the DCE was the modem and the DTE was the dumb  ?terminal. The serial ports on most PCs make the PC be the DTE. The names of the signals on RS-232 are given with respect to the DTE. For example, consider the TD or Transmit Data line. The DTE sends or TRANSMITs on the TD line, while the DCE expects to RECEIVE data on the Transmit Data line.

A DCE is most commonly equipped with a SUB D9 or SUB D25 FEMALE connector.
