Data Terminal Equipment

Data Terminal Equipment or DTE is just the designation of the device connected to one end of an RS-232 connection. The other end is Data Communication Equipment, or DCE. Originally, the the DTE was the dumb terminal and DCE was the modem. The serial ports on most PC's make the PC be the DTE. The names of the signals on RS-232 are given with respect to the DTE. For example, consider the TD or Transmit Data line. The DTE sends or TRANSMITs on the TD line, while the DCE expects to RECEIVE data on the Transmit Data line.

A DTE is most commonly equipped with a SUB D9 or SUB D25 MALE connector.
