FPGA

Field Programmable Gate Array. A type of logic chip, with thousands of internal gates, that can be programmed. FPGAs are especially popular for prototyping integrated circuit designs. However, once the design is finalized, hard-wired chips called ASICs are often used instead for their faster performance and lower cost.
