Format
Need for formatting a Hard disk: formatting is a procedure of preparing a hardisk to work. formating makes a harddisk into tracks & sectors. (data stored in a hdd will be 1's & 0's, these 1's & 0's can be stored in a track which has upto 512 bytes of capacity)

Each sectors 512 bytes of 1's & 0's Each tracks contains 63 sectors, A 40GB harddisk contains 1,53,316 tracks.

so we multiply 1,53,316x63x512=40GB.

partioning of a hdd enables to work with.after formating only we can use the harddisk. formatting is also required when you change the filesystem of the partition as in installing linux.
