FreeBSD
What is FreeBSD?
FreeBSD is a distrubtion of BSD Unix Operating System. The FreeBSD project started in 1992 under the name 386BSD. As stated in the BSD page all openosource distributions of BSD start with the BSD-Lite codebase which is 4.4BSD. Pre-BSD lite versions of FreeBSD are 1.x to 1.1.5.1.

Thus, the FreeBSD project had to re-invent some code that was in the BSD4.3 release that was not in the 4.4BSD due to the legal settlement between UC-Berkley and AT&T, ie the BSD-Lite settlement. Thus there was a first full release past this settlement in 1994 with version FreeBSD2.0
