Gates
What is a Logic Gate?
A logic gate is a physical implementation of the various boolean logic functions such as AND, OR, NOT etc. Several examples are:

The 7400 TTL NAND gate:

Each number in the 7400 series corresponds to a different set of logic gates. For example, 7400 is the NAND gate, 7402 is the NOR gate, 7404 is the NOT gate, and 7408 is the AND gate.

With about $70 of supplies and tools you can build this experiment to see how the gates work: http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/digital-electronics.htm
