Hot Swapping
Hot Swapping

A 'Hot swap' is the process where being a modular device is substituted for another modular device while the system is still powered on and operational.

An example of a Hot swap device could be:

  • Hard Disk Drive
  • Network Switch card
  • CD Drive
One of the great advantages of hot swap devices is to eliminate down time when the occasion forces unscheduled maintenance work. i.e. Device failure. Or to simply add and remove devices without a shutdown.

Hot swapping is available with technologies such as USB and Serial ATA, and is also used in many laptops to swap CD drives with disk drives.
