The first chip was deigned in 1971 for a Japanese calculator company.
The chip had 2300 transistors and was capable of performing 60,000 operations a second. It was designed by Ted Hoff and Federico Faggin. The lithographs and further design notes can be found here
While specializing in semiconductors and microprocessors, Intel has created such things as the first DRAM circuit, the USB standard, and cofounded the Ethernet standard.

What is Intel?
Intel is a company that specializes in making computer processors. It was formed in 1968 by Bob Noyce and Gordon Moore, former employees of Fairchild.
