Knoppix

A Live Linux Distribution

----------------------------------------------------

What is Knoppix

Knoppix is a free Live Linux distribution founded by the German ingenieur Klaus Knopper 2 years ago. Knoppix is a running Linux system on CD, that you dont need to install to work with it. Just put your Knoppix CD into your CD player, reboot your computer and see the Penguing smiling at you. Thats all.

The Knoppix project is a Linux Day project, that is, the idea creating it was formed at the Linux Day.

Where to get Knoppix

Knoppix is available as an ISO image that can be downloaded from www.knopper.net . Just follow the Download links on the project homepage. When finished with downloading you need to create an ISO image CD with your burning rom software.

The Knoppix Kernel

In the beginning, Knoppix supported Kernel 2.4 and later only, yet the latest version, Knoppix 3.4, also supports Kernel 2.6.

How does Knoppix differ from other distributions?

Well, Knoppix was the first of so called Live Linux versions. A Live Linux versions runs on CD only and does not need to be installed on your harddisk, however, Knoppix supports an undocuement install script with which you can copy it to your harddisk too.

Since Knoppix is derived from Debian Linux, its a very stable distribution. Even the 'unstable' version works fine after install.

Can I install Knoppix on my harddisk?

Yes, Knoppix can be easily installed by running the knoppix-installer script. To run this sript, you must sudo su to become root user. The following shows how to run the installer srcipt in the shell:

usr/bin: sudo su //change to root user
knoppix@root: knoppix-installer //[enter]

Thats all. Note that in earlier versions of Knoppix the installer srcipt did not work properly so you might check this on your own.
