Microsoft Access

This area of the site covers the Microsoft Access database.

Frequently Asked Questions '''Microsoft Access''' is a database manager program designed to give the user an easy-to-use interface for his stored information. Access, as part of Microsoft's influential Office suite, probably boasts one of the highest rates of popularity among end-users, although this may have more to do with Microsoft's aggressive bundling strategy than any inherent superiority on the part of the program itself.

Note that Access is ''not'', as many mistakenly believe, a "database." It is a database manager, which means that it provides the interface between the user and the database. The database which Access uses is known as the  ?Jet Database Engine. Note that the Microsoft Jet Database Engine is not exclusive to Access; it can be used independently, even on computers which do not have Microsoft Access installed, through other database managers.

The Jet Database Engine has the advantage of a programmer's interface, which means that programmers in such languages as Visual Basic and C can access the engine directly, without the need of passing through Access.
