Mode 9
One interesting effect possible with Mode 9 is seen in games such as "Mario Kart". A seemingly three dimensional plane is shown on the screen. This is done through the video hardware and the horizontal retrace interrupt. A layer is created that supports rotation and scaling that represents the map of the "level" or whatever is wished to be displayed. A horizontal retrace sync interrupt is created, such that at each horizontal retrace, the scale parameter of the layer is increased (according to a table) such that a three dimensional plane appears to be drawn on the screen.

Mode 9
Mode 9, named for the video mode used in SNES hardware, is a video mode that allows rotation and scaling effects on sprites. On the ?GBA hardware (Which is very similar to SNES in terms of capabilities), "mode 9" is extended to allow more sprites rotated at once. One interesting effect possible with Mode 9 is seen in games such as "Mario Kart".
