A Short Postgres History
The Postgres Project started in 1986 at Berkley with the orginal name of Postgres or Postgres DBMS. In 1994 SQL language intrepreter was added to replace the Postque. The name changed to Postgres95 to reflect its derivative nature from Postgres1.0.

In 1996 the derivative of Postgres1.0 name was changed to PostgresSQl to reflect its differences from Postgres1.0. Version renumbering was also reset to start at 6.0.
