Router
What is a Router?
A router transfers data between networks with the same protocol. Now vendors have misalligned the term to mean both a router and gateway:

For example, the above common dsl/cable rotuer/gateway combinations are commonly referred to as routers even though its combination of a router and a gateway. The router portion uses the ethernet protocol to pass data from the gateway or the computer to other computers on the ethernet network.
