SLIP
What is SLIP?
SLIP stands for Serial Line Internet Protocol. It was designed to use a serial line to connect with internet with the SLIP being used to communicated from the computer modem to through the serial line to the modem on the other side connecting to an internet host. Orginally developed by 3Com in their UNET TCP/IP implementation in 1980.

Its max speed was 19.2 kbs.
