Sybase
The performance gains Sybase got were due to running a single process with very little OS calls and just using raw disk power. Later during OS/2 period at Microsoft, MS bought the Sybase code base for use in OS/2.
This code base at MS later got ported to winNT and became MS SQL server.

What is Sybase?
Sybase is a database that ran on Unix operating systems. Sybase is also the company that was formed to develop Sybase DB by Paula Hawthorn and Bob Epstein and Mike Ubell. Ideas and people orginally came out of the INGRES project at UC-Berkley.The performance gains Sybase got were due to running a single process with very little OS calls and just using raw disk power.
