TCP
What is TCP?
TCP stands for Transmission Control Protocol. It takes care of the physical differences between host computers, routers, and etc and allows them to communicate with each other in a standard way. It was first formely specificed by Vint Cerf, Yogen Dalal, and Carl Sunshine in 1974.

A typical way TCP relates to both the physical network and an application can be seen in this diagram:
