VLSI
Introduction To VLSI[/purple] [/b]

The first intergrated circuit appeared in 1961 almost 14 years after the transistor. The Integrated Circuit (IC) imlemented was a flip flop and cost 100 USD. Now silicon technology has grown and is growing and the cost of an IC varies from a few cents to hundreds of dollars.

Following is the classification of IC technology based on the number of transistors or devives on a single monolithic.

TYPE Devices Applications
SSI (Small Scale Integration) 1-100 Gates,  ?Op-Amps

MSI (Medium Scale Integration) 100-1K    ?Filters
LSI (Large Scale Integration) 1K-10K    ?uP's, ADC's,DAC's
VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration) 10K-2M Memory, SOC’s, FPGA, uP’s

Nano Technology: this is below sub-micron technology, i.e nano. More devices with the help of nano tachnology

The basic law which is still standing from 1969 and self sustaining is Moore’s Law. Gordon Moore had predicted that silicon technology will double the number of transistors per chip every 18 months.

What is VLSI ?
VLSI provides us with integrating million on a single chip. VLSI families  ?PLD’s, FPGA’s, ASIC’s along with the EDA (Electronic Design Automation) tools have changed the entire design scenario.
