Webhosting with IIS

-------------------------

This is a short introduction into webhosting with IIS. To be able to host your website with IIS, you need at least a running copy of either Windows XP Professional, Windows 2000 or Win NT 5.

The Home version of Win XP supports only minimum webhosting features. To be able to follow the steps i describe here, i assume that you have installed IIS version 5.1.

To check this, you can go to start menu->system panel->administration tools. If you click on the icon of the administration tools you should see the icon of the Internet Information Services listed there.

Creating our first Domain

If you have checked your installation of IIS you are ready to create you first domain. Creating a domain with IIS is as easy as 1,2,3. Assuming that you have already created your website with your favorite webprogramming tool, the next step you need to do is save this website in the wwwroot directory of IIS. Under WinXP, this is c:\Inetpub\wwwroot . This may differ to other versions of Windows.

For example, if the name of your website is "myhomepage.html" you save this in the wwwroot directory of IIS. Then, you need to rename it to default.html . This is overall importance because, if you open your webbbrowser, i.g. MSIE, the first thing it does, is looking for a default website. This default website may be called default.html or index.html . If you omitt this step, the browser will not find your website.

Note: if you use Microsoft Front Page, your website will be saved automatically in c:\Inetpub.

Having done this, you go back to the administration tools and open the IIS sevirces again. You should find a new entry defualtwebsite on the left hand side of the window . If anything is correct, right click on default website and choose properties form the context menu.

the WebSite configuration dialog box should appear. Usually you can use all default settings here. You may change the port number to one of choice if you dont want to use port 80 . In the upper corner of this dialog, you should see an advanced button.

Click on it and a new dialog box will appear. Again, you can leave all default settings here. One option that may be of interest for you is the text box, where you can add a new name for your default website. This is cool when you want to host multiple websites with IIS.

This is all. You may separate your websites directory physically by creating a new directory with a name of your choice.
