gateway
Gateway - The gate to other network resources

A gateway is an explanation from networking technology. It describes a system e.g. a Router or an other system which has the decision to provide a way to other networks. Any network-package sent to the gateway is analyzed and the gateway forwards it to the next router who knows the destination network. The information base for the routing-decision is the routing table on the machine.

A gateway could be a hardware-router or a machine with routing software installed. Another type of a gateway is a proxy-server.

The Gateway has to have at least two or more interfaces, one to each connected subnet. The subnets must be different from each other and conforming to all RFC's.
