(Graphics) GIF

Graphic Interchange Format. This format was developed by compuserve for fast transfer of images over telephone lines. It is used for 8-bit images, and takes advantage of the fact that there are often large amounts of the same color adjacent to each other to compress the image. It is a lossless image compression format.
