gnu
Note that "free" in the case of GNU means "freedom" as in free speech, not necessarily "without cost" as in free beer. In contrast to closed or proprietary software, GNU software is released under the General Public License (GPL) which gives everyone the right to view the source code of a program, modify it, and release their changes to the public, as long as they release their changes under the GPL as well.

GNU
GNU is a recursive acronym for "GNU's Not Unix". It is a free operating system replacement for UNIX. People that are familiar with Linux are really talking about the GNU operating system using the Linux kernel.Note that "free" in the case of GNU means "freedom" as in free speech, not necessarily "without cost" as in free beer. In contrast to closed or proprietary software, GNU software is released under the General Public License (GPL) which gives everyone the right to view the source code of a program, modify it, and release their changes to the public, as long as they release their changes under the GPL as well.
