parallel port

What is a Parallel Port?

A parallel port was first implemented by IBM in their design of their first PC to connect to a Centronics printer. Its known as parallel because the bits are sent in paralllel through 8 pins.

IBM came up with the 25 pin parallel standard because of the way the first 25 pins of the centronics printer cable(36 pins) matched up as far as the ones that are needed to operate the printer.
