What is x86?
x86 is an Intel family of CPUs first produced in 1978. The first of the series 8086 was first released in 1978 and was 16-bits in its data size:



The 8-bit version, the 8086 was first used in the first IBM PC in 1982:



But the most famous for technical reasons is the i286 which brought mainframe fucntions such as protect mode to PC/server CPUs that used i286 and future versions of this x86 family of cpus. Thus programs could use protect mode to protect program and os memory while running concurrently.
